Bussey Linage from 1635 to 1765

Charles Bussey 10 VIRGINIA COUNTY RECORDS 23                                                             Bussey, George, tr. by Richard Bennett, 26 June, 1635.

Early research by Lynn Bussey Guittard

The genealogy presented here begins with the 1635 arrival in America of George Bussey.

The writing below is by a descendent of the Cabaniss family. It appears that 8 generations ago Rev. Charles Bussey's (our ancestor who first settled north of Augusta) oldest son George stays in SC while a younger brother Hezekiah’s adventures take him to AL.   His daughter marries into the Cabaniss family.

Here is her writings:

This genealogy repeatedly calls on Lynn Bussey Guittard's 1979 work, The Bussey Family Genealogy. I have done very little original work and hope that others seeing this will notify me of errors and omissions.

I began looking at the Bussey line whenever I hit a snag in my work on the Cabaniss line. I knew that my gg grandfather married a Bussey and that the Bussey and Cabaniss families had been close for many years, but I had never taken the time to learn much of anything about the line. I've always been impressed that my Cabaniss line went back to the colonial days (1700), and now I find that my Bussey line goes back even further (ca 1635).

After his service in the War of 1812, my gg grandfather, Elijah Cabaniss, and his thought-to-be comrade in arms, Hezekiah Bussey, left Georgia for Clarke County, AL. Hezekiah was Elijah's senior by fourteen years and, by then, married (to Rebecca Shaw) with about six or seven children, the youngest being Harriet Anne Bussey (b. 1822, SC).

Family legend has it that sometime in late 1839 or early 1840, Hezekiah Bussey and family, together with Hezekiah's daughter Rhoda C. Bussey and her husband, and Elijah and his wife began their journey to Union County, AR. Family legend is supported by the 1840 census of Caldwell Parish, LA, which lists these three families.

By 1845 Elijah's wife had died. Elijah's second marriage was to one of Hezekiah Bussey's daughters, Harriet Anne Bussey. Thus the Cabaniss' tie to the Busseys.

Arriving in America about 1635 was immigrant George Bussey. It is thought that his wife Ann accompanied George. George and Ann ended up settling in Maryland, starting this most interesting line; a line packed with early patriots and loaded with Baptist ministers. While I haven't traced each of them to families, the DAR lists eleven Busseys in their index of patriots. The given names of these Busseys look to be the very common Bussey given names of the era. One of them, Hezekiah Bussey, is my gggg grandfather (Harriet Anne Bussey's grandfather).

The early Busseys were deeply involved with the rapidly expanding Baptist Church as it spread through South Carolina and Georgia, with many of the Busseys becoming Baptist ministers.

This is my Bussey line as I understand it. If you can add to it, please let me know. In particular I'm interested in the family members of Hezekiah Bussey, Elijah's traveling companion.

I found this photo posted on the internet in a tree.

I found this photo posted on the internet in a tree.  Censuses and this tree say that Andrew H. Foss immigrated in 1893.  The one H.A. Foss I found immigrated about 1877, when Andrew would have been about 3 years old.

Are you sure about Andrew's father?  If this is the right H.A. Foss, they would have immigrated to the same area about 16 years apart.
